The different types of tuning

Implied, the tuning or the brio installed between the 2 or 3 medium flutes (8')

There are several types of brios. Here are the most common and the most representative knowing that there are many variants...

♪ "dry", "flat" or "unison" : no vibration between the 2 reeds.
A "dry" chord is a chord without vibration. This tuning is mainly appreciated on the "Chromatic Basses" models called "classic" or "concert" models.
It is rarely used on "standard" models with 2 or 3 voices because the 2 flutes (8') in tune, played together but without vibration, will bring increased power but very little sound color.
The "dry" tuning can however be interesting when the 2 flutes (8') are not on the same soundboard: the combination of a flute out of box with a flute in a resonance box will bring a color and a interesting power. The combinations of registers will be all the more numerous...this configuration will be very appreciated by fans of "straight" and "classical", "tango" and "Balkan" sounds, but also by "Jazzmans"...

♪ "1/2 swing" to "swing" : from 0.5 to 1.5 beats per second (0.5 Hz to 1.5 Hz).
It will be "1/2 swing" below one beat per second for fans of an almost flat sound... the vibration will be barely perceptible but the color and power of the sound will be very interesting.
It will "swing" above one beat per second. This type of tuning is very popular with diatonists, and remains the tuning most often installed on high-end models.

♪ "American" : from 1.5 to 3 beats per second (1.5 Hz to 3 Hz).
The "American" tuning is very versatile. It allows you to approach a very varied repertoire: from variety to musette through swing, jazz or classical. This "brilliance" , neither too tight nor too vibrant, can also be reduced or accentuated. It is very often factory installed on semi-professional and professional models with 3 or 4 voices, with or without a resonance box...

♪ "heavenly" : from 4 to 6 beats per second (4 Hz to 6 Hz).
The "celestial" or "modern" or "light musette" tuning is very often installed on the standard 2-voice study models. On a 3-voice model with bassoon, this "brilliance" remains a good compromise for the musician wishing to have a bagpipe sound (2 voices) while keeping the bassoon and bandoneon registers.

♪ "Musette" or 3 "super musette" voices: from 4 to 6 beats per second (4 Hz to 6 Hz) see more...
Unlike the previous 2-voice tuning styles, the "musette" brio settles on 3 voices for a double vibration. It is characterized by a strong vibrato caused by a significant shift in frequencies between the two extreme flutes and is balanced with the just flute. It is also the chord that generates the strongest sound power, inseparable from the musette style. It is possible to obtain very varied sound colors depending on the frequency deviations chosen... to each his own style...

"Le Brio" changes more or less over time and requires precise note-by-note adjustment. The tighter the “Brio” is, with little or no vibration, the more the defects will be noticeable. Do not hesitate to contact us for a verification of your tuning, a change of brilliance or a repair estimate .


Tuning principles:

Tuning consists of adjusting the pitch of the notes to that of a tuning fork . This original tuning fork, defined by the manufacturer, determines the pitch of the sound of the accordion. It is fixed between 440 and 442 Hertz for the "reference A" (the A located in the 2nd line of the treble clef staff). It is not uncommon to encounter old instruments with a very high pitch (444 or 445 Hertz) or very low pitch (435 Hertz for a concertina or certain old model)…
In recent years, the tuning fork seems to be "standardized" at 442 Hertz. It is from this tuning fork that the complete tuning of the accordion will be made.
